  • Notes
    • Amos was born in Thurman just prior to the Civil War, 4th in a family of 8 children. As far as we know his father did not serve in the war, although there were five Austins that did serve from the neighboring community of Johnsburg, all sons of Edward and Minerva Rollin Austin and, tragically, 4 of whom died in the war.* These may have been cousins of Amos.

Thurman was a farming community, heavily wooded and quite hilly. Amos grew up surrounded by the Gallup, Bowen and Cameron families, all farmers. The family farm was fairly average compared with the neighbors, and, in 1855 consisted of 40 improved acres and 22 acres of woodland. Th ey had a couple of horses, two milk cows, two other cattle, 18 sheep and a pig. They sold meat, wool, orchard products, butter, various grains, but no maple sugar.**

When he was 26, he married Minnie Belle Bowen, also from Thurman and the daughter of George W. and Fanny V. (Gallup) Bowen. They were married in the parsonage of the Methodist Episcopal church in nearby Warrensburgh on February 17, 1886, the Rev. W.R. Winans officiating, and witnessed by Lawns on Burch and Jennie Harris.

The newly weds began their life together in Thurman, farming. By 1900, Amos and Minnie Belle were living in Thurman next to Minnie Belle's parents, the George W. Bowens. Amos was renting the house and farm and his occu pation was farmer. He and Minnie Belle had two living daughters. Unfortunately, their second daughter, Myra, had been killed in a carriage crash before she was 2 years old. Maude and Frances grew up, attended the Warren sburg school and, later, Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs.

By 1905 the Austin family had moved into Warrensburg. The New York State Census for that year shows Amos and Minnie Belle living on Oak Street in Warrensburg, a residential neighborhood which backs up to Hackensack Mountain. Amos at 45 years old was a laborer, Minnie was 39 and a shirt maker, and Frances, 13, was at school. Maude must have been away at school, as she is not listed with her family and would have been about 19 years old, as yet unmarried. For some period of time before her marriage, Maude was working in a factory in Troy, New York.

At some point between 1905 and 1915, Amos built a lovely 2-story frame hou se on a double lot at 37 King Street in Warrensburgh, which would become the eventual home of Ernest and Maude and their girls. Ernest would live out his days in this house, and Frances, who married Ernest many years after her sister died, lived there with him until a few years after his death .

In the 1915 Census, Amos declared himself a farmer once again, but was now living on King Street, also a residential neighborhood and just a block away from and parallel to Oak Street. Minnie was an "operator in a factory" and Frances, now 23, was a book keeper, single and living with her parents. Maude and Ernest were living on Oak Street, possibly in the same house Amos & Minnie Belle had lived in. Their first daughter, Frances Ernestine, was only 95 days old.

By the 1920 Census, Amos, now 60 years old, was working in a paper mill. Minnie Belle was keeping house. Daughter Frances was still single at age 28, living at home, and working as a book keeper at the local lumber company. Maude was still married to Ernest Rist, and now the mother of two little girls, but she was ailing.

By 1930, Maude had died, leaving Ernest with two little girls. They had moved into the house on King Street with Amos, Minnie Belle and Frances. The Census reports that their home was valued at $7,000, they had a radio set to entertain them. Amos was not a veteran of any war or expedition. He was now 70 and no longer working. Minnie Belle, at 63, was also no longer working outside the home, but certainly was keeping up her own home. Frances was now 38, and a book keeper at a place called "Price P." Ernest, 44, a widower, was the manager of a retail shoe store. He also was not a veteran of any war or expedition. His girls, Ernestine and June, were still at home, aged 15 and 10, respectively.

But just 6 years later, Amos and Minnie began to fail.

Obituary from The Warrensburg News, Thursday, Feb. 20, 1936, pg 4, col 3:

"Amos L. Austin, seventy-five, died at 1 o'clock Friday morning, at his home in King Street. He had been in ill health for sometime, but confined to his home only a few days before his death. Besides his wife, he is survived by one dau. Miss Frances Austin of Warrensburg; 2 brothers, William Austin of Warrensburg, and Douglass Austin of Castleton-on-Hudson, 2 sisters, Mrs. Edward Turner of Warrensburg, and Mrs. Benjamin Reynolds of Athol; also 2 granddaughters, Misses Ernestine and June Rist of Warrensburg.

He was a life member of Warrensburg lodge 425 F. and A.M. and members of the lodge conducted their ritual at the home Saturday evening. Funeral services were conducted at the home at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon, the Re v. A. W. Lewis, D. D., pastor of the First Presbyterian Church officiating. Burial was in the Warrensburg Cemetery. Another clipping from unknown newspaper, with "1936" written in pencil:

      Deaths Exceed Births in Town
Ten Died Here During First Quarter of Year -- Three New Arrivals Are Recorded

Deceased Ones Elderly -- Average Age of the Dead is Seven-four Years -- Two Girls and One Boy Brighten Local Homes During the Period

      The deaths are:

      "... February 14, Amos L. Austin, seventy-five..."

Amos is buried in the Warrensburg Cemetery beside his wife, Minnie Belle.

      Further research:
      1. Need to find a copy of the following book, from DAR (Daughters of Amer ican Revolution) Library Catalog of 1984:
00026 Austin - Jones, Mariam Wright. Family history of John Austin (seven th generation) of Connecticut, Vermont, New York. 1982. 17-98 leave s; 29 cm. Index, Typescript.

      2. Need to find out the year Amos built the house on 37 King Street, Warrensburg. Did he build it for Maude and Ernest? He died in it, per his obituary. Check deeds.

      3. Check 1910 Census for info on Amos and Minnie. Where living? Occupations? Where is Maude living in this period before her marriage? She marri ed Oct. 29 1910 (or 1911).
