      Basil Brainard Dies of Injuries
Warrensburg Man Suffered Fractured Skull While Diving in River

Basil Brainard, 45, of Warrensbuerg died at 10:05 A. M. Monday in Glens Falls Hospital from head injuries suffered about 3 P. M. Sunday while diving in the Schroon River, in the rear of the Cleveland and Barney Flower Shop at Warrensburg. Mr. Brainard suffered a fracture of the skull when his head struck the rock bottom of the river. Dr. P. H. Huntington, Warren County coroner, has issued a verdict of accidental death.

Mr. Brainard was in a part with his wife and child, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Cleveland and Fred Minet, all of Warrensburg, at a point on the bank near where the water is five or six feet deep. The man, who is a Warrensburg post office employee, dived into the water and when he did not come up, the others in the party believed he was trying to fool them. However when Mrs. Cleveland noted blood coming to the surface, Mr. Cleveland plunged into the water and pulled Brainard out. He was unconscious and bleeding from the nose and mouth. The river bottom at that point is said to be of solid rock.

Dr. Patrick H. Huntington of Warrensburg gave Brainard emergency treatment and ordered his removal to the hospital where he was placed under the care of Dr. LeRoy J. Butler.

The body has been removed to the Rozell Funeral Home at Lake Luzerne.

Survivors other than his wife are three sons, Jay Brainard of Niagara Falls; John and Carl Brainard of Warrensburg; one daughter, Mrs. John Cahill of Glens Falls; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ira Jay Brainard of Warrensburg; two brothers the Rev. Sumner Brainard, pastor of the Stony Creek Wesleyan Methodist Church, and Beecher Brainard, both of Corinth, and a sister, Mrs. Archie Baker of Warrensburg.
